'The playing of Jacqueline du Pré and
Daniel Barenboim is quite extraordinarily expressive and beautiful
and the EMI engineers find the richness and warmth for Brahms without
any loss of clarity.' (Gramophone)
Award: Choc du Monde de la Musique, France
Though multiple sclerosis prematurely curtailed
her career, and tragically took her life at the age of 41, Jacqueline
du Pré's reputation as one of the great cellists of the 20th
century is assured, not least through the few recordings she was
able to make during her short career.
This CD represents both her artistry as a chamber
music player and her musical (as well as marital) partnership with
Daniel Barenboim in these famous studio recordings of the two Brahms
Cello Sonatas.
Twenty years separate these two masterworks:
the first, written in 1866, tends to take a backwards glance to
Classical, if not Baroque times, while the second, on a grander
scale, is far more typical of Brahms, the great Romantic composer.
