'I can find no praise too high for Annie Fischer's
playing, for she makes every phrase a delight. Sawallisch partners
his soloist to perfection. Everybody has here combined to produce
something really outstanding among recordings of Mozart concertos.'
(Gramophone)
The Hungarian pianist Annie Fischer was born
in Budapest in 1914 and won the International Liszt Competition
there in 1933. Subsequently, she enjoyed a hugely successful international
career and became, in the words of Sviatoslav Richter, 'a great
artist imbued with a spirit of greatness and with genuine profundity.'
This CD contains celebrated recordings of two
Mozart concertos - the popular C major (nowadays informally tagged
with the name of the film 'Elvira Madigan', which has made the work
even more widely popular) and the E flat concerto written in the
same year, 1785.
The performances were recorded at Abbey
Road Studios in March 1958 with Walter Legge's superb Philharmonia
Orchestra and the German conductor Wolfgang Sawallisch, then in
his mid-thirties and on the cusp of his own distinguished international
career.
