'In every sense these are classic performances
that can never be replaced. The recording of the Concerto is a most
moving example of really beautiful playing and interpretation. And
the passion, intensity and sheer beauty of Janet Baker's performance
translates Sea Pictures into something far greater than had been
appreciated before.' (Gramophone)
Award: Gramophone, UK
Like Victor de Sabata's recording of Puccini's
Tosca, which was reissued as the 100th title in this series of Great
Recordings, the Elgar LP featuring Jacqueline du Pré, Janet
Baker and Sir John Barbirolli, first issued in 1965, is another
classic of the gramophone.
Coupled for the first time with Barbirolli's
account of Elgar's Cockaigne Overture, the LP is presented here
as the 150th and final reissue in the Great Recordings series. It
offers supreme music-making by three of the best-loved artists of
the last century.
Though Jacqueline du Pré's dazzling
international career was tragically cut short by illness in 1973
when she was only 28, the legacy of her recordings of most of the
major works in the cello repertoire has ensured that her reputation
as one of the great instrumentalists of the 20th century is secure.
