'Victoria de los Angeles is in radiant voice
and at her most beguiling in these two attractive and excellently
recorded discs of orchestral songs from her native Spain. A special
word of praise must go to the supple orchestral accompaniments throughout.'

The great Spanish soprano Victoria de los Angeles
was born into a musical family in 1923 in Barcelona, where she studied
at the Conservatory and made her operatic debut in 1941. Her career
developed quickly both in Spain and internationally and she became
one of the best-loved singers of her time.
Though she was outstanding as an opera singer,
particularly as the lyrical heroines in operas by Puccini, Rossini,
Massenet and Gounod, she is remembered even more fondly as a superb
recitalist in a repertoire of Lieder and songs, including always
a selection from the rich heritage of those from her native Spain.
During her long career with EMI, Victoria
de los Angeles recorded almost everything in her repertoire, including
Spanish songs from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. This CD
reissues famous recordings from the 1960s in which she sings orchestral
songs by six of the most notable Spanish composers of the last century.
