"Lovely playing from the LSO, sensitively captured by the engineers. Bax’s Tintagel is a classic and gorgeous performance, the Ireland overture an affectionate and wholly delightful one. The Irmelin Prelude is exquisite and the interpretation of A Song of Summer deeply moving. Delius is also lovingly performed by the Hallé and again very well recorded."
(The Gramophone)
John Barbirolli recorded these English tone poems in 1965–68, with the London Symphony Orchestra and his own Hallé Orchestra.
Despite his surname, the conductor was born a Cockney in London and was all his life a ‘passionate Englishman’: this music flowed through his veins, and his identification with the various strands of English Romanticism represented here is total.
Like all the recordings in this release, these are newly transferred and digitally remastered.
