"The disc of Goethe settings is splendid. The songs call for the special insight in their interpreters that fortunately we have here and I cannot begin to describe the innumerable subtleties of vocal and instrumental colour and expression in these superlative performances. The same applies to Schwarzkopf and Moore’s superb recital of the women’s songs from the Italian Song Book, which shows the great and difficult art of Lieder singing and playing at its finest."
(The Gramophone)
This 2CD treasure-trove of Wolf commemorates the death last year at 90 of one of this difficult composer’s finest interpreters.
All the recordings are the fruits of a unique triple collaboration: between singer, accompanist, and Schwarzkopf’s producer/mentor/husband Walter Legge.
Drawn from six LPs, the collection is the work of the deviser and compiler of Great Recordings of the Century, Ken Jagger, who has assiduously made a point of reassembling into their original sets songs separately recorded.
The booklet boasts a sympathetic and penetrating essay by that doyen of writers on song and singing, John Steane.
