Perlman recorded these works in Pittsburgh between 1977 and 1980, when Heifetz’s supremacy in the Korngold and Sinding and Nathan Milstein’s in the Goldmark were considered virtually absolute. He made an immediate impression: ‘Such is the velocity of Perlman’s first movement,’ reported the Penguin Guide of the Sinding, ‘that one wonders whether the recording transfer is playing at the right speed.’
Julian Haylock’s notes offer enlightening comparisons between Perlman’s playing and Heifetz’s; in particular, he observes of the Korngold that Perlman produces ‘a notably leaner, less-honeyed tone here, almost as though in direct homage to the work’s dedicatee, Jascha Heifetz’.
All three recordings, including the digital Korngold, have been newly remastered using Abbey Road Technology.
