These early stereo recordings all date from November and December 1955. Beecham had celebrated Sibelius’s 90th birthday (8 December 1955) with a concert in London that had included Pelléas et Mélisande and Tapiola; and in the course of a birthday tribute broadcast by the BBC he typically spoke of ‘that rather strange composition – very strange indeed – Oceanides, which incidentally, the composer has asked me to record...Of course I shall do it’.
Beecham had previously recorded the Seventh Symphony with the New York Philharmonic in 1942, and during his final decade it was a frequent feature of his concert programmes all over the world.
Again, this new ART remastering improves greatly on the compilation’s 1990 appearance in the Beecham Edition.
