Taking pride of place as the 150th title in the series is Jacqueline du Pré’s legendary account of Elgar’s Cello Concerto.

Like Victor de Sabata’s recording of Puccini’s Tosca, which was reissued as the 100th title in this series of Great Recordings, the Elgar LP featuring Jacqueline du Pré, Janet Baker and Sir John Barbirolli, first issued in 1965, is another classic of the gramophone.
Coupled for the first time with Barbirolli’s 1962 account of Elgar’s Cockaigne Overture, the LP is presented here as the 150th reissue in the Great Recordings series. It offers supreme music-making by three of the best-loved artists of the last century.

‘In every sense these are classic performances that can never be replaced. The recording of the Concerto is a most moving example of really beautiful playing and interpretation. And the passion, intensity and sheer beauty of Janet Baker’s performance translates Sea Pictures into something far greater than had been appreciated before.’
